What is it About?

Kaya Seka or Sarvanga Dhara or Pizhichil is a special treatment procedure followed by traditional asta vaidyas (physicians) of Kerala. The word Pizhichil in Malayalam language literally means “ squeezing”. Here the whole body is bathed in streams of lukewarm medicated oil with simultaneous soft massage.

This treatment regenerates and rejuvenates the body. It is especially good for Vata disorders such as arthritis, paralysis, hemiplegia, sexual weakness and nervous disorders. It is also used for rheumatism and other inflammatory diseases. It also helps to reduce body weight.

Ayurveda Abhyanganam is a popular and very old traditional non-deep tissue massage with lukewarm Ayurveda medicated oils. Medicated oils are the most essential and important component of the Ayurveda Abhyanganam, and these oils are applied on the entire body or specific area of the body with experienced and qualified therapists or Ayurveda doctors.

After oil application, they do gentle massage procedures in different directions from top to bottom and side to side in 7 positions and apply pressure on marma points (vital points of the body according to Ayurveda).

The Ayurveda Abhyanganam improves overall body health, immunity, strength, and wellness. It improves mainly blood circulation system, lymphatic drainage system, neuro functioning system, joint strength, and skin glow. It gives sound sleep, controls blood pressure, diabetes, and improves the quality of sense organs.

The Keraleeya Vasti treatments are a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves retaining warm medicated oil over the local areas (Low back, Neck, Knees & Eyes). It is mainly done to treat spinal cord problems, joint issues, eye problems, etc., including chronic pain, stiffness, and muscle spasms also.

During the procedure, a reservoir made of black gram dough is formed on local areas like lower back, neck, knee joints, and eyes with warm medicated oils or ghee. This oil or ghee is retained for a specific duration, usually around 30 to 45 minutes, allowing the therapeutic properties of the oil to work on the affected area. The procedure is done on the lower back and is called KATI VASTI, on the neck is called GREEVA VASTI, on knee joints is called JAANU VASTI, on eyes is called NETRA VASTI.

What is it About?

Panchakarma is a treatment procedure for the body, mind, and consciousness that eliminates the doshas and rejuvenates the tissues. It is based on Ayurvedic principles, where every human is a unique phenomenon manifested through the five basic elements of Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth.

The combination of these elements are three doshas (tridosha): Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, and their balance is unique to each individual. When this doshic balance is disturbed, it creates disorders resulting in disease.

Panchakarma is done individually for each person with their specific constitution and specific disorder in mind, thus it requires close observation and supervision.

Vamana karma / Vomiting Therapy - It is a first Therapy of Panchakarma procedures and it is a potent kapha Dosha cleansing and detoxification procedure. Vamana facilitates the expulsion of accumulated kapha dosha and restoring dosha equilibrium and vitality.

Vamana therapy is used in the treatment of respiratory conditions like allergies, sinusitis, and metabolic conditions such as obesity, Diabetes and hormonal problems like PCOD, Thyroid and skin problems. During the therapy, patients undergo preparatory measures or Purvakarma, followed by the ingestion of medicated herbal decoctions to induce vomiting. The process is supervised by trained Ayurveda doctors to ensure safety and efficacy. After the therapy, patients experience improved digestion, respiratory function, and overall well-being along with symptom alleviation.

Virechana karma / Purgation Therapy - It is a second procedure of Panchakarma. This procedure is to eliminate the accumulated pitta dosha and toxins from the body through anal route. It is restoring balance of the pitta dosha and rejuvenating vitality.

What is it About?

Kizhi means poultice in Malayalam language. In Sanskrit, it is known as Pinda Sweda. A Kizhi is a poultice that is densely packed with herbal ingredients and heated in warm herbal oil or decoction throughout the treatment. The Kizhi is massaged over the affected area or the whole body as required. Mainly 3 types of khizis are available.

Ela khizi/Patrapinda sweda – Elakizhi (Ela meaning Leaves; Kizhi meaning Bolus or Potli) is an Ayurvedic treatment which includes sweat inducing method. It is a process in which herbal leaves are fried with some medicated oil and other ingredients and are tied in a potli. This potli is dipped into hot medicated oil and then applied slowly all over the body or the affected area.

Podik khizi/Choorna pinda sweda – Podikizhi is the common type of Ayurvedic massage technique that helps in alleviating pain and reduces swelling occurred due to arthritis, muscular spasm and rheumatism. Chooranam (powder) is the main ingredient in this.

Navara khizi/Sashtika saali swedam – Navarakizhi (Navara – Medicated rice; Kizhi – Bolus or Potli) is one of the most popular sweat inducing therapies which is used to relieve pain and stiffness in the muscles.

What is it About?

Nasya Karma – It is a 5th treatment of Panchakarma procedures. In Ayurveda that aims to cleanse and rejuvenate the head and neck region. It involves the administration of medicated oils or powders or herbal juices into the nasal cavity, which helps to remove toxins and excess mucus from the sinuses, throat, and head.

How to do: Soon after the sneha and sweda karma of the face, neck, and shoulder, the patient is asked to lie on the back with a slightly elevated head with a tilted backside. Then a lukewarm medication is instilled in both nostrils with the help of a proper instrument like a dropper. Once the Nasya procedure is completed, a mild massage of the palms, soles, and shoulders is performed.

Vasti karma is one of the main therapies used in Panchakarma treatments, which mainly focuses on treating the disorders which are caused due to the imbalance of Vata Dosha. Because, Vayu is the motive force behind all physiological and pathological states of the body.

Vasti is considered as a complete treatment because it incorporates all the treatment aspects of Ayurveda into it.

People are having a wrong understanding about Vasti karma, they always correlate it to the Enema therapy used in the contemporary treatment which is given to evacuate the faeces but the Vasti Karma which is explained in Ayurveda is entirely different from Enema, and helps to evacuate the Dosha (Toxins) which are formed due to the imbalance of Vata Dosha.

What is it About?

Ayurveda Dhara is a profoundly relaxing and rejuvenating Ayurvedic treatment that involves a gentle, continuous stream of medicated warm oil or decoction or milk or buttermilk poured onto the selected area of the body.

If we use the oil or buttermilk on the forehead, it is called Shirodhara, or if we use Dhanyamlam on the body, it is called Dhanyamladhara. If done on the eye, it is called Netradhara. These all depend upon the disease condition.

The herbal bath or herbal steam after Abhyanganam or Udwarthanam is called Ayurveda bath or Ayurveda steam.
